New Jersey LCSW renewal: what's due by August 31, 2026
Clinical licensees carry the heaviest continuing education load in New Jersey — 40 hours, half of them clinical. Here's the requirement, the deadline, and the order to work through it.

Work the mandatory categories first
The 20 clinical hours are usually the easy part — most LCSWs accumulate them through work they'd do anyway. Ethics and cultural competence are where shortfalls appear, because they require deliberately seeking out those specific courses.
Count those two categories before you count anything else. If you're short, that's the constraint on your renewal, and it takes time to complete a course and have the credit post.
Why the timing is tighter than it looks
New Jersey renews every social work licensee on the same day. More than 30,000 people hold an active New Jersey social work license, and all of them face August 31, 2026. CE providers fill up, the board's queue lengthens, and the renewal portal gets busiest in exactly the window when most people get around to it.
Finishing in July costs the same as finishing in the last week of August and carries considerably less risk.
Before you file
1. Count your ethics and cultural competence hours. These are the categories that block renewals.
2. Confirm your license status with the board. Discrepancies in your record take longer to resolve than the renewal itself.
3. Renew through the Division of Consumer Affairs. Don't wait for the final week.
4. Keep your certificates. New Jersey audits a share of renewals.
